Is Social Media a Fad?

January 6th, 2010 | 1 Comment »

Are you are in doubt of what is currently occurring in the world of social media? For those stat lovers out there, you should have a little taste of this video from @equalman and Socialnomics. It is a wake up call and it simulates how quickly the future of marketing is changing. There is no doubt that social media networks are changing the world we live in. Given that it may only be more popular in wealthier countries at the moment, the internet can be accessed from almost any city on the planet and every day thousands of people are introduced to it.

There are many benefits you can take when riding this tidal wave of data. In terms of running a business, there has never been a better time to branch out and leap into these new technologies. We are at the beginning of the wave, so jump on! Having a solid and well represented social media presence can establish you as a leader in your industry and connect your business with endless possibilities of creating new developments. You can communicate to your target audience with a clearer and more accurate message, building a trusting relationship between business and consumer.

It is possible to monitor and measure your brand using tools like Twitter and Facebook. You can see what people are saying about your brand instantly and respond to them directly to get feedback. Consumers feel less like sheep being herded into some scheme and more like a person who is respected when they have more of a one on one relationship with your business. Some people agree that meeting face to face with a customer is the best way to build trust, but with today’s technology and the amount of prospects that can be reached that is not very feasible. With social media, that personal touch can be represented in a more effective manner.

So, is social media a fad? I don’t think so. I believe it is another tool mankind has created to communicate and relate with each other in ways we’ve never been able to do before. I don’t see how this technology will pass into history like it never existed, but I think it is something that will grow more powerful and beneficial. People from all over the world can find similarities and differences and converse with each other. The more bridges we can build between one another, the more understanding we can share and the more ideas we can grow. I don’t see social media going away for a long time.

Please feel free to comment below. Do you think social media is a fad? Do you think it is beneficial to us or damaging? How do you see it influencing the future of marketing and brand management?
